A Sunny Rockingham Speedway, near Corby, was the venue for Round 2 of the Championship with the team looking forward to more development on the car and pushing for some good results. Some mid week testing with Ginetta SuperCup driver Rob Boston helped confidence moving into the Bank Holiday Race Weekend.
Qualifying was a closely fought session, with Ben driving hard through traffic and making it to the top 10 which was a massive step forward. Burns was way ahead of the field but the remaining top 12 cars were only split by 1.5 seconds so it was shaping up the be a good close weekend's racing.
Race 1 Ben got a great start and gathered speed and momentum from there, making some superb moves as he made his way up towards the front of the field. 13 hard laps were completed with Ben finishing in 6th place, by far the teams best result so far in the season and just showed the potential in both car and driver.
The team were confident for more of the same in Race 2, but this was no to be as by the hairpin on turn 2 Ben's fantastic looking number 16 car was punted from behind and sent spinning off circuit, and sent the driver in question to the Clerk of the Course to receive a penalty. Rejoining over half a lap down the comeback was on and saw Ben go from 24th to 11th in just 3 laps in an inspired drive forward. Mechanical failure then put a stop to what would have been a guaranteed top 10 finish – a sticking throttle sent the car at speed into the gravel and unfortunately meant that the team would start from the back of the grid for Race 3.
The car bogged down on the outside of the grid as the lights went out, but soon picked up pace and took several cars on turns 1 and 2. Another fine and committed dive saw the Number 16 car rage forward, collecting places on nearly all laps with Ben crossing the line in 9th place just a few seconds behind 7th and 8th.
The team have returned to PPiK with confidence and have improved the pace of the car as well as picking up some solid points in the Championship. Thanks to all the mechanics and support crew who made the results possible. Massive thanks also to Round two sponsors www.blytonpark.co.uk and www.madebyoomph.co.uk
Next up is the home of Formula 1 in the UK, Silverstone Circuit, where the team will be looking to build on their positive race pace.
